Nearly 75 student-athletes from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) visited Adams and Gilbert Elementary Schools to celebrate National Student-Athlete Day on April 6.

The UIW students participated in PE and art classes, read to students in the library, had lunch with students in the cafeteria, and even helped out with after school dismissal.

“We loved seeing the students engaged with the college students,” Social Worker Jennifer Montes said. “There were lots of smiles on the faces of our students, and the athletes seemed to really enjoy the time spent with us.”

According to Montes, the schools’ connection with local universities is a benefit to both the young students and the college students, as they can both learn from the experience.

“The visit gave our student a chance to see that college students care enough to take time out of their day to be with them, and in return, the athletes are giving back to the community,” Montes said. “Together, they are creating lifelong memories.”

Montes hopes to partner with UIW again next year and continue to foster the connection between both groups of students.
