Stonewall Flanders Elementary School kicked off its “Coffee at the Curb” initiative to connect with parents and remind students of the upcoming STAAR dates this week.

For Principal Dr. Traci Smith, it was important to get parents off to a great “STAART” with a warm, cup of coffee and make sure every student was well-prepared for the exam.

“We try to think creatively about how to reach parents,” Dr. Smith said. “At drop off, they’re a captive audience – we can hand them a flyer, why not just make it a little more enticing with a cup of coffee?”

The initiative proved to be a success.

“Parents were very appreciative,” Dr. Smith said. “We reminded them to make sure their child was well rested, ate a good breakfast and arrived on time each day.”

Staff and faculty members, as well as parent volunteers, helped out with the curbside delivery. Parents also received a personal note to remind children to use their strategies, take their time, show their work, re-read passages more than once and check all their work before finishing.

“We believe the little note helped remind them of the important things,” Dr. Smith added. “It was also a great way to interact positively with parents!”
