An open invitational chess tournament was held at STEM Early College High School for all Harlandale ISD third through fifth grade students on Dec. 1.

The tournament lasted all day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There were a total of 52 students competing from eight elementary school campuses including Bellaire, Rayburn, Schulze, Gilbert, Carroll Bell, Morrill, Collier and Stonewall Flanders.

Students played six rounds of a Swiss-style chess tournament to determine an overall winner.

Carroll Bell Elementary fifth-grader Lorena Gonzalez earned first place with a record of five wins, one draw and zero losses.

Carroll Bell Elementary fifth-grader Adam Torres came in second place with a record of five wins, zero draws and one loss.

Stonewall Flanders Elementary fourth-grader Viviana Guerrero received third place with a record of four wins, one draw and one loss.

Bellaire Elementary Joaquin Robledo earned an honorable mention for having the highest score from a third-grader with a record of three wins, two draws and one loss.

The tournament was a huge success because of the help from campus chess sponsors who prepared students for the tournament and helped make sure the tournament ran smoothly.

A big thank you to all the Chess Sponsor(s) from each campus: Isabel Garza and Michelle DeWitt (Bellaire), Michelle Brown and Sandra Silva (Rayburn), David Cruz and Tatia Allison (Schulze), Juan Bazaldua and Joe A. Vasquez, (Gilbert), Joe Barrientes (Carroll Bell), Rey Carreon (Morrill), Desiree Alvarado (Collier), and Kelly Anderson and Natasha Rodriguez (Stonewall Flanders).
