Superintendent's Message

10/1/2018

With the school year well under way, I recently met with the Student Advisory Committee representatives from our middle and high schools. These articulate students bring creative ideas and share their campus highlights.  One of the best things about being superintendent is meeting and talking with these young people.

October is National Principals Month, and we encourage our community members to join us in saying “thank you” to our campus leaders in recognition of their dedication, hard work and integrity. Our principals are visionary academic experts who lead their campus staff in an ongoing effort to achieve the highest academic standards and inspire our students to be the change.

Other notable events in October will be Crime Prevention Month, Diversity Awareness Month and Bully Prevention Month. We want to remind parents that to maintain our focus on instruction, Halloween costumes, face paint and masks will not be permitted on Oct. 31.

Students will enjoy a holiday on Oct. 8, and we will mark the beginning of the second six-weeks on Oct. 9.

McCollum High School will host the District Family Night on Oct. 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Night at the Museum theme will feature representatives from area museums who will be there to share information. Interactive activities and games will highlight STEM education.  District College Night will take place at Harlandale High School on Oct. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

We are grateful that McCollum High School is one of five high schools chosen to receive benefits from the AT&T Aspire Award. The funding from the grant will provide additional support for the Communities in Schools partnership, helping our students build college and career planning.
