Superintendent's Message

Superintendent's Message
September 1, 2017
September has arrived and the first days of school have gotten off to a great start. In spite of having to dismiss our staff early on Friday and cancel Saturday’s activities due to Hurricane Harvey, teachers were ready and our children were welcomed back on the first day of school. We are fortunate that San Antonio missed the severe weather that was predicted. Our schools are prepared to welcome any new students who may have had to leave their home and move into our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people throughout our state who have been impacted by the hurricane.
We appreciate the efforts that our parents and students have made to arrive at school on time each day.  Traffic issues at some of our schools are being addressed so drop off and pick up will run smoothly. Focusing on academic success is our first priority, however, our students have the opportunity to engage in a number of extracurricular activities such as sports, band and fine arts.  Many are currently involved in football, volleyball and cross country track. Fans are encouraged to come out and support our teams and spirit groups.
Every high school graduate is eligible for the Harlandale Education Foundation (HEF) Scholarship. We will be hosting our 8th annual HEF Scholarship Golf Tournament on Friday, Sept. 29 at the Republic Golf Club. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor and supporting our mission of creating a college-going community, please visit Harlandale.net for details.
Student safety is an important part of providing a quality education for our children.  For the safety of those within our schools, all visitors must first report to the school’s front office to sign in and be issued a visitor badge. Our district faculty and staff endeavor to provide safe and supportive school climates where all students understand good behavioral expectations.  Please be aware of school zones, reduce speed, and do not use cell phones for calling or texting when driving.  When school buses are stopped and have activated their alternating red flashing lights or stop sign, Texas state law requires drivers to stop.
The district provides an anonymous phone line to report neighborhood information including bullying, vandalism or any citizen and student concerns.  The phone number is 989-SAFE (7233).  We extend our appreciation to the citizens of the Harlandale community for helping us keep our children safe.
Grandparents’ Day will be celebrated on Sept. 10. We are grateful for the many grandparents in our school district who invest in the lives of their grandchildren and other students in this community.
